My friend has many beautiful antiques, so going into her home is like playing I Spy. There is always some new piece to marvel over. As I walk around her home inspecting her treasures, I remember she needed something hooked up on her television. I'm the techie amongst our friends, so I offer to help her out. I am now squatted on the floor and squeezed in between the wall and TV. We are still having a conversation when it turns to birds. She talks about the morning doves that are visiting her home. I mention that morning doves and cardinals were my mothers favorite birds. As quick as I mention this, she spins around and starts rifling through a box. She returns with a beautiful open porcelain egg with two doves in the center. She turns it over and I notice it is also a music box. She winds the box and it begins to play. The song is Somewhere My Love from the Doctor Zhivago movie. My mothers favorite birds and favorite song. We begin to sing along with the music and I started to choke up. I had to turn my head as I am wedged in and unable to really move. My mother passed many years ago, but it was such a strong and emotional moment.
The next day, as I am walking through my bedroom, I pick up the egg and wind up the music player. It begins to play. The song is now something different - it is no longer Somewhere My Love. While speaking with my friend last night and I told her the song has changed. I mention it was probably my mom, she has a major crush on Omar Sharif. Today on the news, I find out he has crossed over. I'm sure my mom was in line waiting to greeting him.
